Moving, if you catch its right tune is a simple and quick process. Consider the following Tricks, Tips & Secrets to add an extra edge to your move. These Tips & Tricks ensure you a Smooth & Successful move. Following are some of the ways that will help you to achieve success in your move:
Before Moving
- Use the move as an opportunity to clean your house.
- Arrange a Moving & Garage Sale with those things that you do not want. You can also donate it to charity.
- Think of the space in your new home before you move. Start planning about the best ways of arranging your furniture in your new home. You can even prepare sketches that will help you to execute your plan.
- Get lots of packing tapes. This will help the boxes in strengthening and it won’t get opened during the transit.
- Plan for the place where your movers can park for loading in your old home and for unloading in your new home. The further they have to walk, the longer will it take, so see that the distance between your home and the loading or unloading place isn’t too long.
- If you have a piano, think about how you are going to move it. You may need to make some special arrangements to move it.
- If you are moving yourself, hire something that will help you in your move; like a trolley.
- Teach your kids your new address and telephone number as soon as you know it.
- Do not apply special cleaning or maintenance products such as, oils or wax on antique furniture before a couple of weeks of your moving. They may softer the wood and leave it for further damages.
- Unplug your television before the day you move. This actually helps the television in settling down to room temperature, so that it does not cause any internal damage while moving.
- Write down the instructions for use for any systems, like central heating or air conditioning.
- If your building or apartment has any alarm system, let the movers know that before hand.
- If your new home has an alarm system, ask for its code before you enter the house.
- Try to get a good sleep on the night before you move.
- Do not leave the things for last minute so that you are worn out the next day, by the time you reach your new place.
Packing
- At the beginning, packing may seem to be fun, but soon you might get tired and bored of it. So, set deadlines for yourself to finish the task.
- Under Packing is as bad as Over Packing. The contents of the boxes that are under packed are more likely to be broken than over packed.
- Pack your boxes with a combination of heavy and light items.
- Never leave all your packing for the last day. You can be awake for the whole night and still do not get things right.
- Never use foam ‘peanuts’ to pack around the computer. This can generate static electricity and in turn cause harm to your machine.
- Wrap fragile items in newspaper. Although it is rare, but in case if the print comes out, wash it with water before you use it. So, for wrapping things save newspapers and magazines from weeks ahead.
- You yourself or one of your Moving men must do the last walk around your old house before you leave.
- If you have a habit of hanging clothes and other stuffs, behind your bedroom door, check it well before moving.
- Write “Open First “on the boxes that contain the essential items and “Do Not Move” on the boxes that you are planning to carry yourself.
While Moving
- Clean your new home before you arrive, if you cannot do it, hire some person that will do the cleaning before you reach.
- Try to move on a weekend, this will not only be cheaper for you but will also help you to get hold of the contracts that you might need in case there is a problem, like: utilities companies not connecting your service and the like.
- If any of your boxes contain fragile items, mark them clearly and also inform the movers about them; so that they can take extra care.
- If you are carrying boxes of heavy items, you should never bend your back but your knees.
- Before your movers arrive, try to stack all your boxes and containers at the corner of the room and leave the room to the movers. This will speed up their process of moving.
- Make sure that someone is there in the new house before the movers arrive to take care of the unloading.
- Moving is a curious mixture of action and boredom. Feed the movers regularly, as they need lot of energy and prevent them from taking frequent breaks.
- Give your mover your cell phone number, so that they can keep in touch with you when ever it is required.
- If you find that any of your belongings or your home is damaged by the movers, inform them immediately.
After Moving
- After your move has been completed, do not forget to pay tip to the movers. Never feel that you have to tip them even if you are not satisfied with their job. Tip them only when you are happy to show them that you are happy with the job that they have done.
- Plug-in the electrical items only after they reached the room temperature.
- You can experience a feeling of “blue” for a couple of days after moving.
- Let your friends and families know that you have moved safely.
- You can even plan and actually organize a house warming party.
- If you are moving with kids, leave them in their new bedrooms with a couple of boxes that they can unpack. This will keep them engaged.
- Do not keep them in side of major electrical goods like, refrigerator. They can either harm the good or harm themselves.
- Keep your kids occupied and give them lot of attention. They may feel out-of-place because of the move.
- Check, if there is any damage created as a result of moving. Some of the moving companies give you only limited time for the claim.

- Mark all the boxes and especially the boxes carrying essential articles.
- Include a special box in your packing that will carry either a new game or a new book for your kids, that will keep them engaged and they will also find something to look forward to.
- Plan to eat out or order your meal from outside for the first night.
