Packing is one of the most time-consuming aspects of a move, so it's imperative you stay organised throughout the whole process. Stick to these organisation tips when wrapping and boxing away your belongings for quicker and more efficient packing.

Collect your supplies

Before the packing process can begin, it's important to collect all your packing supplies. These include:
  • Boxes of varying shapes and sizes
  • Packing paper and bubble wrap
  • Moving blankets
  • Mattress pads
  • Stretch wrap
  • Packing tape
  • Permanent markers

Pack room to room

The easiest way to stay organised while packing is to pack up one room at a time, starting with the least used rooms first. As it gets closer to moving day, you can begin to pack every day items and important rooms like bathrooms, bedrooms and the kitchen.

TIP: Set aside your first night kit away from your other belongings so you have easy access to these items after your move.

Keep similar items together

Pack like items with each other. For example, books should be packed with other books and clothes with other clothes. This will save room in your packing boxes and make the unpacking process easier.

Clearly label boxes

Label all your boxes to assist your removal help during your move, and future you when it comes time to unpack all your belongings.
  • Write on the top of the box and at least two sides what each box contains and what room it belongs in your new home
  • Write everything in thick marker in legible handwriting
  • Label breakable items "fragile" and include an arrow indicating which side of the box to keep facing up

Make an inventory

Once your home is packed and ready to go, create an inventory list detailing each room that is being moved, the number of boxes in each room and what is in every box.

To make this easier, number each box. For example, if your living room has eight boxes, label the boxes themselves "1 of 8," "2 of 8," "3 of 8" until each box has a number. Then note on your inventory what is in each numbered box. Should a box go missing during your move, you will know what belongings have been misplaced.

Hire professionals

Of course, if you don't want to deal with the stress of packing, hire a removal company to do the wrapping and packing for you! Simply fill out a free quote form to find removalists in your area and be sure to inquire about their packing services.
