What is a Local Move?

The difference between a local move and a long distance move is the total number of miles between the locations. Different removal companies may have varying standards for what they consider to be a local move, but generally speaking, a local move is one that occurs within the same state.

While local moves are not as complicated as long distance moves or international moves, they still require preparation and a plan.

Prepare for a local move

Preparing to move locally will still require that you begin early - there's never a time that's too soon to start planning.  If you find it helpful, make yourself a to-do list of what needs to be done before you move.

For example:
  • Choose a removal company
  • Change services (medical, financial, etc.)
  • Change your address
  • Cancel and set up your utility services
  • Donate unwanted items
  • Packing
There will be tasks that you need to add or remove from the list, so it's important that you keep it handy throughout your move.

In the months and weeks before your local move, you should pare down your belongings so that you'll have less items to pack and ultimately move. Items that you no longer need, but are in good repair can be donated to charity, given to friends or sold in a yard sale. During this time, you should start collecting your packing materials which might include bubble wrap and packing paper in addition to boxes and tape.

As you're lightening your load, you can begin packing up items that you know you won't need throughout the move such as seasonal clothing, books, tools and other items. Anything that you won't need until well after you're settled in your new home should get packed.

If you have an overlap between your two homes - meaning you don't have to be out of your old home before you move into the new one - take full advantage of it. Instead of trying to move everything in a single day, do a little every day. Eventually you'll be done and moving day will be that much easier.

Hiring a local removal company

If you plan on hiring a local moving company, it's imperative that you do not wait until the last minute. Waiting too long to hire a moving company may leave you high and dry for moving day with no local moving companies available for your desired date.

Planning ahead will ensure that you have enough time to prepare for the removal company and that you are able to have the moving date you need. About six to eight weeks in advance of your desired move date, begin gathering quotes from local moving companies in Australia.

Removal quotes and moving estimates

We suggest that you gather removal quotes from at least three companies so you can properly judge which company best suits your needs. Each removal company should come to your home and provide you with an in-house estimate - this will always be the most accurate way to quote costs. Be wary of companies that only offer estimates over the phone as it could end up in extra costs.

Before signing with a removal company, be sure to get as much information as you need including:
  • What are (if any) some additional costs?
  • What other services do they offer?
  • Are packing and wrapping included in the estimate?
  • What insurance do they offer? What is covered?

You want to make sure you're properly informed about the moving company before agreeing to anything.
